Playing for the DESI EGAN (RIP) Memorial Trophy
Chairman’s address for TromsØ IL game.
On behalf of the Cherry Orchard Football Club I wish to welcome everybody to tonight’s
game. I would like to extend our warmest welcome to the players and travelling party from
TromsØ IL “Legends of 96” to our Club here at Elmdale. It is a great privilege for Cherry
Orchard Football Club to host a team from a Club with such an illustrious European pedigree
and to have players here who have competed in UEFA’s top competitions and indeed
represented Norway at full international level. It is fantastic to see that players who
celebrated a special achievement in their careers when winning the Norwegian Cup 20 years
ago have remained friends over that period. We are delighted that they have chosen to
mark this special occasion with a trip to Dublin and agreed to come play us here in
Ballyfermot.
Interest in this fixture has certainly captured the imagination locally, in particular with our
Over 35 players who have made themselves available in large numbers to take part in this
game. Thanks to Dave Curley, Paul Kelly, Johnny Owens and Dave Hope (Cherry Orchard
Football Club Over 35’s management team) whose efforts will, I’m sure make tonight a very
special occasion and something the Club can be very proud of. A big welcome and thanks to
our officials and sponsors without whom tonight would not be possible.
I would also like to thank the members of our schoolboy and senior committees who have
given this fixture their full backing and thank those schoolboy players from the Club who
have made themselves available as mascots and ball boys for tonight’s game. Finally a big
thank you to Mark O’Neill who has worked tirelessly behind the scenes and without his
efforts this game would not be taking place.
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Sean and the members of the Egan family
who are here tonight. It is fitting that such a big game for the Club is to be dedicated to the
memory of Desi a long time coach at Cherry Orchard Football Club whose untimely death
shocked us all.
To Morten and the travelling party from TromsØ IL of Norway. I hope you will enjoy your
stay in Ireland and that the hospitality you experience in our country will remain in your
memory way beyond your next special anniversary. I also hope that this is just the beginning
of a long lasting friendship between our two Clubs at all levels.
Céad Míle Fáilte.
Tom Kennedy,
Chairman
